NON-FUNCTIONAL FASHION

This work conveys the adverse effects of hyperreality and dark patterns on the mental health of individuals and the disconnect it creates with reality. Due to the correlation between identity and fashion, the artist chose to express the idea in a way that is influenced by fashion. Non-functional fashion is described by the artist as fashion that does not function as it should or as is expected. It is a garment that is unwearable yet the size, shape, and the drape technique used in its construction suggests it should be worn.

The underpinning theoretical influence of the work explores how people are callously used as commodities by social media companies and are manipulated by dark patterns on the internet to engage excessively with the digital realm. This can lead to social media addiction and overexposure to the hyperreal and the simulacrum can detrimentally impact mental health and increase suicide rates.

The draped sculptural fragments that form the work express the notion of individuals being broken and disconnected from reality as a result of society's excessive interactions with the web user interfaces. The positions of the individual sculptural forms are both manipulated and reliant on synthetic filaments which signifies dependent and addictive behaviours which have been influenced by dark patterns. The negative space the fragments encapsulate implies the presence of a human form, but like hyperreality, it is just an illusion.
